Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine, has introduced Perplexity Assistant, a new tool designed to simplify daily tasks using reasoning, search, and apps. This assistant is now available for Android devices through the Perplexity app.
Perplexity Assistant performs multi-app actions, such as hailing a ride or finding a song. Powered by Perplexity’s search engine, it can access the web to handle tasks like finding event details, setting calendar reminders, and more.
The assistant is also multimodal. It can use your phone’s camera to answer questions about what’s around you or visible on your screen. It keeps context between actions, allowing seamless workflows. For instance, it can research local restaurants and reserve a table for you.
Currently, Perplexity Assistant is free and supports 15 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Hindi.
However, it has faced criticism for launching incomplete products in the past. For example, its shopping feature, designed to place orders directly, was found to be slow and unreliable during testing.
Challenges and Growth: Perplexity’s Journey with Innovation and Controversy
CEO Aravind Srinivas acknowledged on X that some Perplexity Assistant features “[might] not always work.” He assured users that the company plans to resolve these issues in the coming months. For instance, the assistant can currently summarize unread emails and upcoming calendar events only if users enable a notifications-based workaround.
This announcement comes shortly after Perplexity introduced Sonar, an API service that allows enterprises and developers to integrate its generative AI search tools into their applications. Additionally, it recently acquired Read.cv, a professional social media platform.
Founded in 2022, Perplexity has secured over $500 million in funding and is valued at $9 billion. Its AI-powered search engine now handles over 100 million weekly queries as it accelerates monetization through programs like advertising.
Despite its growth, legal disputes with publishers present challenges. News Corp’s Dow Jones and the NY Post have filed lawsuits against Perplexity, accusing the company of operating a “content kleptocracy.” Other publishers, including The New York Times, have voiced concerns about content replication. In October, The Times issued a cease-and-desist letter to Perplexity.
In response, Perplexity has defended its practices, emphasizing its commitment to respecting publisher content and offering revenue-sharing opportunities for outlets.
