Amazon is set to host an event on February 26, where it plans to introduce a major update to Alexa with generative AI features. According to Reuters, the new AI-powered Alexa will engage in conversations and may even handle tasks for users.
The in-person event will take place in New York, featuring Amazon’s head of devices and services. A company spokesperson confirmed that Alexa will be the main focus, but details about the specific upgrades remain undisclosed.
AI-powered Alexa
The new Alexa will use AI to handle multiple prompts in sequence, making interactions more natural and efficient. According to the report, it will also feature agentic AI, enabling it to take certain actions on behalf of users. This marks a significant upgrade from the current version, which processes only one request at a time.
Amazon plans to roll out the updated Alexa to a limited group for testing. Amazon will continue offering the existing version as “Classic Alexa” at no extra cost. However, it is unlikely to receive new features. This approach mirrors Google’s transition from Google Assistant to its AI-powered Gemini assistant on Android devices.
