Britain Just Became Silicon Valley’s Favourite Power Socket

By the AI Boom Team | Published 17 September 2025 The Tech Prosperity Deal is the biggest bet America’s tech giants have ever placed on Britain. Unveiled during President Donald Trump’s state visit, it bundles £31 billion of private money into data centres, chips and supercomputers. So where is the cash going, and what does it mean for ordinary businesses?

The Tech Prosperity Deal in numbers

  • Microsoft: £22bn ($30bn) over four years. It is the company’s largest commitment outside the US, and includes plans for the UK’s biggest supercomputer, built with more than 23,000 advanced chips.
  • Google: £5bn over two years, including a new data centre at Waltham Cross in Hertfordshire.
  • Nvidia: 120,000 advanced GPUs spread across the UK, its largest rollout in Europe.
  • Stargate UK: a British version of OpenAI’s giant data centre programme, built with Nvidia and UK firm Nscale at Cobalt Park in North Tyneside.
  • CoreWeave: £1.5bn for a renewable-powered data centre in Scotland.
For the full rundown, see the BBC’s coverage of the deals and Fortune’s breakdown of the $42bn package.

Why Britain needed the money

Britain has world-class AI researchers, yet it has always been short of computing power. Picture a country full of brilliant chefs with hardly any kitchens. As a result, much of the clever work built here has run on servers abroad. The deal also reaches beyond AI. It covers quantum computing and nuclear energy, because data centres are extremely hungry for electricity. Prime Minister Keir Starmer called it a “generational step change” in the UK–US relationship.

The catch

  • Whose kitchen is it? Most of the money is American. Critics ask whether Britain is building its AI future on someone else’s foundations. Shadow technology secretary Julia Lopez also pointed to falling foreign investment overall, as City AM reported.
  • Power and water. Giant data centres need huge amounts of both. Local communities and the national grid will feel that, as the BBC’s look at Stargate UK explains.
  • Pledges are not buildings. Announcements are cheap. In fact, a year later, the Stargate UK data centre is on hold.

What it means for business owners

  • Local AI is coming. More UK computing power could mean faster AI services that keep your data in Britain, which helps with data protection.
  • Skills will be in demand. Google alone says its spending will support 8,250 UK jobs a year.
  • Do not wait for the concrete to set. The tools already exist today. Our 12-week AI plan for small businesses shows how to start without a big budget.
