UK Economy Beats Forecasts: What the 0.1% August Growth Really Means

By the AI Boom Team | Published 17 October 2026

The UK economy was expected to shrink in August 2026. Instead, it grew by 0.1%. It is a small number, but it surprised economists, and the story underneath it is more interesting than the headline.

The August 2026 UK GDP figures at a glance

Gross domestic product (GDP) is simply the total value of everything the country makes and sells. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) published the latest monthly estimate on 15 October 2026. Here is what it found:

  • August: the economy grew 0.1% on July. Forecasters had mostly expected a small fall.
  • July: growth was 0.4%, unchanged from the earlier estimate.
  • June: revised up to 0.4% from 0.3%.
  • Three months to August: the economy was 0.7% bigger than in the previous three months.
  • Year on year: August was 2.1% above August 2025.

What drove the surprise?

Think of the economy as three big engines: production (factories, energy, mining), services (shops, banks, tech firms, restaurants) and construction. In August, only one of the three pulled its weight.

  • Production rose 0.8%, its fastest pace in nine months. Manufacturing did the heavy lifting with a 1.2% jump.
  • Services were flat, showing no growth at all. Services are the biggest engine, so this matters.
  • Construction fell 0.2%, its fourth monthly fall in a row.

The bigger picture: three months tell a different story

Look at the longer window and the pattern flips. Over the three months to August, services grew 0.9% and carried the economy. Production fell 0.2% and construction fell 1.0%. In other words, August was a factory-led month inside a services-led quarter. The ONS said computer programming was a major contributor to growth over the period, which is a useful clue for anyone watching how technology feeds into the wider economy.

What the experts and forecasters are saying

The International Monetary Fund recently raised its 2026 UK growth forecast from 1% to 1.3%. Not everyone is celebrating, though. KPMG’s chief economist, Yael Selfin, noted that the economy has been resilient despite higher energy prices and global tension, but warned that rising inflation and tighter financial conditions make it hard to keep this momentum going, with a quieter end to 2026 likely. The ONS also pointed to signs of weaker consumer demand and some softness in the jobs market.

One more data point from the same day: the UK trade deficit narrowed to about £920 million in August, down from £2.32 billion in July.

What it means for business owners

  • Do not over-read one month. A 0.1% move is small and can be revised later.
  • Technology is part of the growth story. Software and computer programming activity is helping lift the numbers, which is good news if you are investing in AI tools.
  • Watch energy costs and inflation. These remain the main risks for the months ahead.
  • Next date for your diary: the ONS publishes its next monthly GDP figures on 12 November 2026.
