Google Extends Data Residency Options to the UK in Latest AI Initiative

Google has announced that its data residency program will now include the UK, offering customers and users more control over their data.

Starting in November 2024, Google Cloud customers can run machine learning processes for Gemini 1.5 Flash directly within the UK.

This expansion enables UK-based companies to access a broader range of AI and machine learning tools, driving innovation across the region.

Anne-Marie Lamb, Sales Director for UK & Ireland at Google Cloud, called this move a significant milestone during her talk at Google Cloud Summit London 2024. She explained that it gives customers more control and peace of mind.

She emphasized that this shift ensures all organizational data stays securely within UK borders, allowing users to handle everything. From data storage to inference and output generation— locally within the country.

Google Cloud UK Data Residency

In a blog post announcing the expansion, Google highlighted the growing demand for AI-enabled technology. However, many must navigate strict data residency requirements.

“There’s been a significant rise in interest for Google Cloud’s generative AI, especially in the UK,” said Daniël Rood, Head of Google Cloud AI, UK.

He emphasized that some industries and clients need stricter data residency to fully leverage these tools. Additionally, Rood reaffirmed Google Cloud’s commitment to keeping customer data within designated regions, ensuring all machine learning processes happen locally.
