The UK AI Data Centre With No Plug: Microsoft Walks Away From Nscale’s Loughton Site

Imagine buying 23,040 of the world’s hottest AI chips and then finding out the building can’t get electricity until the 2030s. That is roughly where Britain’s flagship AI data centre has landed.

Microsoft has pulled out of its deal to be the anchor customer at Nscale’s Loughton site in Essex, a project the UK government had hailed as the country’s largest sovereign AI data centre. The Telegraph broke the news, and Microsoft later confirmed it.

What went wrong with the UK AI data centre?

Power. The site was meant to switch on in 2027, but grid officials reportedly told Nscale that electricity may not arrive until the early-to-mid 2030s. A data centre without power is a very expensive warehouse.

Why does the grid take so long?

Think of the grid as a nightclub with one door and a very long queue. Demand for new connections jumped from 41GW to 125GW in under a year, and data centres make up a big slice of it. The regulator is now trying to clear out speculative projects so serious ones can move up, and some developers have started building their own gas-fired power instead of waiting.

A fair reality check

Microsoft says its decision relates to a single site and it remains committed to the Nscale partnership. It has not publicly blamed the grid, so that part is reported rather than confirmed. Nscale says it is still committed to Loughton, is looking at other power sources, and that the problem does not affect its other contracts. It is also lining up a US stock market listing, reportedly at up to a $35 billion valuation, so the timing is awkward. This is not the first wobble either: OpenAI earlier backed out of a UK partnership with Nscale and Nvidia, reportedly over energy costs and regulatory uncertainty.

AI Boom Team take

The AI race is no longer only about who has the best chips. It is about who can plug them in. For UK businesses, that means the AI services you buy may be hosted wherever the power is, which might not be here. The chips were the easy part.
