Enterprise software leader ServiceNow and AI-focused startup CoreWeave revealed plans to invest billions in the U.K. to Boost AI Growth. It signals strong support for Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s push to attract foreign investment.
ServiceNow announced a $1.5 billion investment over the next five years to expand its U.K. operations. The U.S.-based company aims to grow its workforce, currently at 1,000 employees, and open new office spaces across the country.
In addition, ServiceNow plans to localize data processing for its large language models (LLMs), which use vast amounts of training data to understand and generate human-like text. The company will also bring Nvidia GPUs to its data centers in London and Newport to power these LLMs.
This investment will enable ServiceNow to develop domain-specific LLMs tailored to the needs of U.K. clients and government agencies.
Major Investments Drive AI Sovereignty and Infrastructure Growth in the U.K.
Policymakers and regulators in Europe are increasingly advocating for AI sovereignty. This concept emphasizes that the data and technologies supporting advanced AI systems should be stored within Europe and reflect its culture and history.
CoreWeave, a cloud computing firm specializing in renting out high-performance GPUs for AI model training, announced a £750 million ($978.6 million) investment to meet U.K. demand for AI infrastructure. This follows its £1 billion commitment made in May.
Additionally, two U.S. data center operators revealed plans to invest billions in the U.K. CyrusOne announced a £2.5 billion expansion, while CloudHQ committed to a new £1.9 billion data center campus in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
These investments total £6.3 billion, according to the U.K. government. U.K. Technology Minister Peter Kyle highlighted these moves, stating, “Today’s drumbeat of investment is a vote of confidence in Britain and our approach to work with business to deliver sustained growth for all.”
Upskilling Programs
ServiceNow plans to launch new skills programs in the U.K., aiming to reach 240,000 people.
“The United Kingdom is embracing large-scale technology transformation. In this AI-driven era, the country remains a global leader in innovation for the benefit of all its communities,” said Bill McDermott, CEO of ServiceNow, on Monday.
He emphasized that their investment accelerates the U.K.’s efforts to leverage AI, empowering individuals, enhancing experiences, and strengthening societal bonds. McDermott added, “Together, ServiceNow and our U.K. customers are building a future where technology benefits everyone.”
These announcements coincided with the International Investment Summit, where Prime Minister Keir Starmer is gathering 300 business leaders to boost foreign investment.
ServiceNow, CoreWeave, CyrusOne, and CloudHQ are part of a broader U.S. tech push into the U.K. Earlier this year, Salesforce opened its first global AI center in London. This center supports AI training, upskilling programs, and promotes industry collaboration. Salesforce’s AI center is part of its $4 billion investment in the U.K. over the next five years, announced in June last year.
