Imagine an office manager who never sleeps, reads your inbox before you do, chases the customer who still owes you money, and only taps you on the shoulder when something genuinely needs you. Anthropic says that is what its new app, Duet, is for.

On 21 October, Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet, as reported by Reuters. It is a phone and web app where Claude works as a proactive agent rather than waiting for you to ask it something.

What is Duet, in plain English?

Most AI chatbots sit and wait until you type. Duet does the opposite. According to 9to5Mac, it runs on its own cloud computer, so it keeps working after you close the app. It watches your email and calendar, sends a morning brief, follows up on stalled conversations and tackles bigger jobs, such as a research brief or a slide deck, which land as editable files for you to review.

Crucially, it asks before it sends messages, makes payments, signs documents or deletes anything.

Why small businesses should care

Small firms have the same admin as big ones, with a fraction of the people. Trending Topics reports that Duet is aimed mainly at business chores and connects to thousands of apps, including Gmail, Slack, Microsoft 365, HubSpot, Stripe, QuickBooks, Docusign and Shopify. In practice, that could mean:

The catch: not for the UK yet

Now for the sad bit. Duet is a research preview open, by waitlist, only to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. Trending Topics says users in Europe are excluded for now, and Team and Enterprise plans are not included yet. There is no extra charge, but Duet draws on your existing plan limits, so background work can use them up faster. No UK date has been announced. Boo hoo.

It is also early days. Anthropic itself says Duet can misread a thread, misjudge how urgent something is, or miss things that arrive between its check-ins, and early testers reportedly saw errors such as a viewing booked on the wrong day. Trending Topics also flags “prompt injection”, where hidden instructions on a web page or in a message try to trick an agent, as a security concern.

Get ready now: five steps for UK owners

  1. Tidy your data. An agent is only as good as the inbox, calendar and invoices it can see. Clean them up first.
  2. Put your tools online. Agents work best with cloud accounting, email and e-signature apps, not paper and spreadsheets on one desktop.
  3. Write your approval rules. Decide now what an AI may do alone (summarise, draft) and what always needs a human (paying, signing, sending to customers).
  4. Check data protection. Before connecting customer or staff information to any AI service, review how it handles personal data under UK GDPR.
  5. Start small today. Use the AI tools you can already get in the UK for drafting and summarising, and build the habit of checking the output.

The AI Boom Team take

Duet and its rivals, which 9to5Mac says include ChatGPT Dots and Meta Muse, mark a shift from AI that answers questions to AI that gets on with the job. For a five-person firm, that could feel like hiring an extra pair of hands without the salary. But treat the first versions like a new starter: helpful, keen, and in need of supervision. The UK businesses that prepare now will be first in line when it arrives.
